Q: What is the difference
between offsite and onsite backups?
Offsite backups work like regular backups - with one important
difference. ie. Instead of sending backups to a tape drive or
other media attached to the computer being backed up, your encrypted
data files are sent over the internet to a secure storage system
offsite.
Q: Why are offsite backups
better than regular backups?
In short, offsite backups are safer, simpler, faster, more
reliable and cost-effective. In addition to the security of knowing
your data IS backed up properly and securely stored away offsite,
remote backups eliminate the need for manual labour as well as
expensive backup equipment and media. You also have the security
of knowing that you will never have to face the huge costs associated
with re-typing lost data and/or file recovery services. Most businesses
that experience a catastrophic loss of computer data never recover.
Q: Why should I choose RBA
as my remote backup service provider?
1. All your files are protected by state of the art encryption
from the moment they leave your premises. No-one but you can read
them.
2. We provide completely automated offsite protection for your
critical data.
3. We ensure fast online recovery of any version of any protected
file.
4. We provide an easy to use service that is easy to setup and
operate with minimal requirements.
5. Whenever it is required, we provide onsite installations/consultations/recovery
services.
6 . We allow you to upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time,
and will effect such changes promptly.
7 . RBA's backup server is monitored by highly skilled technicians
whose sole responsibilty is to make sure the backups are performed
correctly.
8. We locate our servers in Tier-one data centres providing a
high level of environmental protection and physical security for
our servers.
9 . We equip our servers with redundant disk storage to minimise
the possibility of data loss due to hardware failure.
10. We are committed to excellence in Customer Support and Technical
Assistance.
11. You dictate the level of assistance you require at any time.
For example the remote backups software allows you the freedom
to self-install and self-restore online. If you would prefer to
be assisted in the process, you can enlist the services of an
RBA consultant. Alternatively, an RBA consultant can come to your
premises and perform the entire install and/or recovery for you.
Q: Why do so many health
professionals utilise RBA's services?
Remote Backups provide the perfect solution for health professionals
searching for the safest and simplest way to meet regulations
that require them to keep records for at least seven years from
the date of the last entry. Health professionals can rest assured
that, as stipulated in the Medical Practices Act, their records
will be stored so that "confidentiality is maintained"
and that they are not "lost, stolen or damaged".
Q: How does the reliability
compare with that of tape backups?
There is no comparison. Remote backup services are much more reliable.
A major risk of tape systems is that even when all indicators
point to successful backups, the restores fail. Secondly, most
businesses using tape systems do not employ a secondary off-site
fail-safe system. In most cases, tapes remain onsite along with
the computer that was backed up. RBA not only provides for off-site
storage of your critical data but also maintains multiple copies
of your encrypted data.
Q: Can I still use my tape
system?
Many clients continue to run their tape backups but no longer
transport their tapes off site. The tape system can be used to
create a full backup of the entire system once or twice a month
- instead of on a daily basis.
Q: How long will a remote
backup take?
ADSL users will be able to do incremental backups in thirty to
sixty minutes. The initial backup can take several nights to complete.
We recommend backing up the most important files first and then
selecting other files as the backup progresses. Or the initial
backup can be run over the weekend. If preferred, an RBA consultant
can come to your premises and make the initial backup of your
system.
Q: How secure are remote
backups?
All files are encrypted using Blowfish or DES encryption which
is selected by the user with their own personal encryption code
which is only known by the user of the system. Blowfish encryption
has never been broken by a hacker. DES is used by the federal
banking system.
Q: What is encryption?
Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that scrambles
a data file. The only way to unscramble it is with the encryption
code. Encryption means that no-one can read your files - not even
us.
Q: Can I backup other
platforms/operating systems?
Remote Backups Australia supports mapped network drives. It can
backup data from any computer that is accessible via the network.
Q: Do I need to backup my
entire computer?
No. You only need to backup important user files, not program
or system files. If your computer crashes, you can restore programs
and the operating system from the original CD-ROMs.
Q: How often should I
use RBA?
If you are a frequent computer user and create/change numerous
files daily, you may wish to backup daily. Others prefer to back
up weekly. RBA has the ability to perform automatic backups on
a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Q: How many backups do you
retain?
By default we maintain seven. However, we can customise the number
of backups to meet your needs.
Q: What tasks do I have to
do every day to run a backup?
None. Once you schedule the time and frequency of your backups
during installation, the backups run automatically.
Q: Are the backups
incremental backups?
They can be. Again, you have complete control. Full, incremental
or differential or a mixture of all 3 - it is up to you.
Q: What if there is a transmission
failure during the backup?
If a transmission is interrupted in the middle of a backup, the
software will continue to retry until a connection can be re-established,
then continue the backup where it was interrupted.
Q: How are open files handled?
This is rarely an issue since backups are usually performed after
business hours.
Q: How much data can I
back up?
As much as you want. You are charged on the amount of actual compressed
data you store. Click here to see pricing
for a range of storage sizes.
Q: What if I find a file
is corrupted?
That is why having a sufficient backup retention is essential.
A backlog of backup sets that you can restore from will allow
you to go back and restore the last version of the files that
was not corrupted.
Q: Do I need a special
connection?
No. Your existing internet connection will be utilised. Or even
a non-internet connection can be used.
Q: What if my internet connection
is busy during the day?
RBA schedule most backups to occur after hours. We can even instruct
your computer to power itself down after completing its save (subject
to hardware and software compatibility).
Q: How will I know if
my backup is successful?
You will be able to verify this by viewing the log file on your
computer. However, as part of the RBA service, our technicians
track the backup schedule and should a scheduled backup not be
received within 24 hours of its scheduled time we will notify
you of the failure.
Q: Where and how do RBA
store my data?
RBA store data on our secure servers located in Belmont, Western
Australia. In addition, CD-ROM copies of your data are taken and
stored in an offsite vault.
Q: What is the cost of storage
and restoration of my data?
Our clients are charged monthly based upon compressed offsite
storage size. Click
here to view our prices. There is also a one-of
set-up fee - which is dependent upon the level of assistance you
require ranges (starting at $75 for an online self-install). Similarly,
the cost of restoring your data will depend upon the level of
assistance you require (eg. online self-restore 20c per MB).
Q: What are the minimum
requirements to subscribe?
1. Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/2000/2003/XP/XP professional
or any dos-based system
2. Permanent internet connection (or non-internet dial-up connection)
3. Permission to enter store remotely to monitor and configure
the program
Do I need any extra software
and do you supply it?
Yes. If you do not already have Remote Manager Software
such as pcAnywhere installed, it can be provided by us. Basic
Remote Manager Software comes free as part of the set-up package.
Alternatively, you may prefer to purchase the highly recommended
Semantec's pcAnywhere ($299). It is the world's leading remote
control manager, is user friendly and very well-supported.
Do you have a preferred
internet service provider?
Many of our client's choose to use Westnet.
Their prices are competitive and were recently voted best ISP
